Step 1 - Determine the type of smoke alarms currently installed in your house.

1. Battery Powered
No wires; runs only on batteries.
Most older homes have battery-powered smoke alarms. These alarms have no protruding wires and are battery powered.

2. Hardwired
Runs on your home's electricity and may have battery backup. Only one alarm sounds when test button is pressed.
If your home was built in the last 20 years, you probably have hardwired smoke alarms. If only the alarm that you test sounds, then you do not have an interconnected system.

3. Interconnected
Runs on your home's electricity and may have battery backup. All alarms sound when one test button is pressed.

I was a little puzzled when I opened the mailing box to discover that the four smoke alarms I ordered were in packaging that was worn, faded and yellowed. After opening each of them, I noted that the manufacture date was stamped 2005 on three of them (2008 on the other). As smoke alarms are suposed to be replaced every ten years-- as stated in the product literature as well as by fire safety groups-- these smoke alarms were already more than half way through their lifespan!

I'm a bit miffed by Amazon that they aren't paying close enough attention to time-sensitive stock. For the price I paid for these alarms, I expect to get a "fresh" product.

Easy to install, easy step by step instructions on how to couple the two of them together. I wish they weren't so pricey, but otherwise, they do exactly what they said they would do. I live in a 3000 sq foot split level and have one in the basement and the other upstairs and they communicate well!!

Purchased two smoke/carbon monoxide detectors and two smoke-only detectors for different areas of the house. Units function as advertised but found to have what I consider to be very limited range.

Setup was simple, and everything worked perfectly during short range tests. However, when units were placed 25' apart with a single wood stud/drywall wall between them they wouldn't communicate. Tried to relocate slightly in case I was getting interference from wiring in the wall, but no luck. Also tried different units in different positions/orientations in case transmission was direction or there were variations in signal strength between units. No luck.

FirstAlert customer service was friendly but had no real solution other than to reorient or reposition the detectors. They said the expected range is about 30'. Not for me.

Overall I'd say they're good products with good features (haven't had them long enough to comment on battery life). However, the limited range limits placement options and/or requires a relatively dense network of detectors.

PS: Smoke-only and smoke/carbon monoxide detectors WILL work together in a network. However, the smoke-only detectors don't have ability to "say" carbon monoxide. If a carbon-monoxide detector is triggered and relays an alert to a smoke-only alarm, the smoke-only alarms only has the ability to say (for example) "evacuate... smoke in bedroom!"
